I can't tell if the image has anything to do with them possibly having a new home? If so I like the bottom one because you can see the dug up yard. If that has nothing to do with it I'd say go with the top, its more intimate.
I agree that the top is really natural looking... but there is not much context other than it is in front of a house. But if people know what the book is about, I think they will figure it out. So use the more intimate one.

I like the farther away one. The casualness/awkwardness of his hand on her shoulder with the top one bugs me :P
