Definitely use Photomatix. The education version is cheap. Capture a minimum of 3 images at 1 stop difference each. 5 at 1/2 stop or 7 or 9 images at 1/3 stop is really good. Use the highest light smoothing setting and lowest amount (around 40-50) in Photomatix to use the software the way it was intended by the CGI artists that developed it. Otherwise crank all the settings for a strange looking photo.

Cool I left jhole a while ago, im down in Yosemite right now but I will be back up there in august and thanks i will try the photomatrix
