Which One?

I need some editing help. Which one do you think works better? If you have any reasons that would be helpful.

Ian,

The bottom one is much more dynamic. Yeah...not even close for me--very nice!

I like the top one. I connect more with the subject because he's bigger in the frame. This might be a size issue though, I'm assuming they'll be large prints, it might just be the small size on my computer.

Ian,
I like the bottom one. The large grass space gets me in the upper. The size of the guy wont be an issue because I know you like to print gigantic.

The bottom one. His stance makes it look like he owns that place...which would make sense if he's the one keeping it looking beautiful. The top one nice because he's closer but I do not get that connection.

it depends on how you are cropping your other images, whether or not the distance will play a factor, but ultimately i concur, the bottom one.

I'd say the top one, the bottom one is too static for me. The top has a much more dynamic composition. Though as someone else said it does depend somewhat on what sort of framing you're using for the rest of the images.

Thanks guys, I am utterly confused as to which one to use.

The bottom image, without a doubt.

There is an interesting correlation with his posture and the open space being conveyed. I find it far more appealing visually.

O.K. Thanks everyone, I appreciate the input. The bottom one was the first one I scanned thinking I preferred it. Then when I scanned the second closer view I thought I preferred that. Then I went back to the first one. I guess there are aspects to each that are working and final choice may be based on if it is a 30x40 print or 8x10 inches in a book. I pride myself on being a good editor of my work. Just goes to show that even after 20 years doing this it can be an impossible choice.

The one where he is bigger in the frame because it is less about the house/environment and more about the person whereas the other one the house and the person compete for the same amount of psychological space and if you want that push/pull go with that but if it is to be an environmental portrait that concentrates on the dude, the bigger dude for SURE. And that's my 2 cents and I'm stickin' to it.

I agree with chris... but it would be important for me to see the others as a series for deciding one or the other...its hard for me to chose between them as out of context as they are for me..in that case.as far as im concerned, either one is fine...ha

I agree with everyone who said the bottom image, his pose is much better, and the top image loses me off of the left hand side because the grass seems to run off of too much of the edge. The tree on the bottom one is beautiful and really helps ground the image and contrast the subject.
