I like the second one more. I think the first guy on the boat is a little too stern, the "connection" you have with the rower in the second is more engaging. Show us more! Perhaps you should start your own blog to keep us updated?
The lower photograph of the rower is more interesting for me. I think the cropping of the upper image makes the man look crammed in the frame. A horizontal composition may work better.
