Joakim Eskildsen

http://www.joakimeskildsen.com

My newest favorite photographer.

Forbidden Island

This summer I managed to sneak into the island nation of Cuba (the United States forbids almost all travel to the communist state). I spent 40 days traveling, photographing, and conversing. Later this fall, I plan to put on an exhibit, and I am talking with Vaughan Judge right now to try to get gallery space here on campus. Periodicity I will be posting a few of my favorite photos from my journey. Please comment with any questions, compliments, or criticisms.

Here are the guidelines for the scholarship, due November 1st. If you aren't one of the lucky ten chosen for a scholarship, there are also volunteer opportunities to help offset the costs.

Also check out the NW regional conference being held in Seattle, November 7-10.

Go and strut your stuff for the photo world to see!

New Blog

After having my blog hacked and shut down a few years ago I have decided to start blogging again. Starting 10 months of travel seemed like the perfect opportunity to keep track of our adventures. Only a couple of posts at the moment, but many more to come.

Still waiting to see posts from all of you. Enjoy your semester and see you in the spring.

It only took me two years...

After two years, I'm finally posting my photos from my travels during the 2011 summer, where I spent time in Kenya, Germany, and Amsterdam. It's been blog-tastic. There are also more recent photos (2012) from San Francisco and Las Vegas.

Why don't people smile in fine art portraits?

This is worth a read for sure if you are interested in Portraiture photography.

Work

School starts in less than a month and I don't have to go back which is a strange feeling. Not having to constantly contemplate academic projects is both a relief and a little unnerving, I don't want to lose stride so I've been passively considering some personal projects for this fall/winter, but for now I'm photographing what pays. To supplement my work for Montana Whitewater, I was fortunate enough to land a job as an I.C. for a certain very(x2) wealthy club in our part of the state. Some images from a  golf tournament I covered below.

The Last Glacier Continued

Hi All, Hope you are having a wonderful summer. I guess schools starts in a few weeks. It feels strange not to be going back this year, but hopefully I will see some of you in passing. Please continue to post here. Looks like things have slowed down significantly. Let's not let the Blog die a slow death. It would be great to see what you are all up to while I am gone. My plan is to also blog here as well as on a new personal blog. I had hoped to start way back in the summer but I have had no success coming up with a blog name I like. If you all have any suggestions please send them my way.

I am just back from 9 days of heavy hiking in Glacier NP. 110 miles up some rather steep mountain sides. As a result I will need at least a week of recovery with lots of sleep. The Last Glacier project is coming along well. I think I made about 10 new images that on initial impressions look successful. I was photographing with my new Technical camera which was a significant improvement and solved many of the camera shake/movement issues I had last year.

On the way north we met with the new curator (Caleb Fey who has an MFA in photo from Yale) at The Holter Museum and we talked about details of our first exhibition of the project that will happen in 2015. Most likely that spring. Lots to do before then. Exited to make big, big prints.

Here are a couple of images from not very careful quick stitches. Enjoy.

Show me your work, dangit

I'm sad more of you aren't posting on here. I want to see what people are up to and working on!

In the meanwhile, here's a cool article about an exhibition from the recently released staff of the Chicago Sun-Times.  In case you're not familiar with them, the entire photojournalism staff was fired about a month ago as the CST tries to stay afloat. They now have their journalists using their iPhones for photos.

But back to the exhibition:

"Just a month after the Chicago Sun-Times fired its entire photojournalism department, 18 of the former photographers are back to show new work at Chicago Photography Center's exhibit See What You Missed, co-curated by former Tribune photographers Charles Osgood and José Moré. Featuring work byPulitzer Prize–winning legend John H. White and creatives like Brian Powers, the exhibit (opening July 14) showcases a variety of new images from the photographers. Osgood talked to Chicago about the exhibit and the future of photojournalism....

...The original idea was to do "A Day in the Life of Chicago." It turned out that the day that was chosen, not everybody could do it. The rules were changed and we said, “Okay, shoot anything you want between June 29th and July 3rd.” Everything had to be turned in by midnight of the 3rd.

[The photographers] turned in anywhere between two and ten pictures. They could choose one that they really liked and wanted to have in the show, period. José and I would choose another two. We were coming up with three [photos] for each."

Interesting Henri Cartier-Bresson interview from NYTimes photo blog

Henri Cartier-Bresson: ‘There Are No Maybes’

"In 1971, Sheila Turner-Seed interviewed Henri Cartier-Bresson in his Paris studio for a film-strip series on photographers that she produced, with Cornell Capa, for Scholastic. After her death in 1979 at the age of 42, that interview, along with others she had conducted, sat like a time capsule in the archives of the International Center of Photography in New York.

That is, until 2011, when Ms. Turner-Seed’s daughter, Rachel Seed, learned of their existence and went to I.C.P. to study the tapes. It was a profound experience for her, since she was 1 when her mother died and did not remember her voice."

KODAK HAS STOPPED MANUFACTURING ACETATE BASE.

This Rochester News Report tells us that Kodak has officially shut down it's acetate manufacturing plant. The 60 employee jobs that were released will have no significant impact on the bankrupt company.

Disclaimer: The video states that although Kodak will stop manufacturing acetate in-house, they still have years worth of stockpile for continued film production. After their own stock of acetate base runs out they plan to outsource acetate production to another company to continue manufacture of film.

More photography from the Tribune

Here are some shots from the 2013 NCAA Softball Regional I shot yesterday here in Columbia. It was the first softball I've shot here, with most all of my previous scheduled shoots being rained out.
