RIP Irving Penn
There's a really great article in the New York Times about Irving Penn's life and work. I just saw his Small Trades series at the Getty this weekend and his work was truly amazing. I don't think people realize how much influence he had in today's fashion and editorial photography. Take a few minutes today to revisit his work in his memory.

Paul Graham - Short Essay
I was lucky to meet with Paul Graham last week, to look at my photographs before his lecture at the MIA. He wrote a beautiful piece for the Yale MFA exhibiton found here
It is called "Photography is Easy, Photography is Difficult."
It is the nicest thing I've read in awhile. Highly recommended!

ignore these
HUNTER! Check this guy out!!
These pictures time travel.
More cameras! Slit-scan. Stephanie walking in the studio. You can see her head near the middle left, and arm. Then her foot to the right, and then you can see her coming out of a wormhole.
I got some color film to try. I don't think the banding bothers me.
What do you think?
I see lampshades. I mean, lightboxes. Round ones.
Processing color film?

The What Is?
What is this "What Is?"? What it is is not important but rather what it is not. 'What is?' is an idea of what else there is and a reflection of what is not. It is either a place, a time or a feeling, but is never something tangible. It is rather a metaphysical metaphor of what is to be and never be. What ever it is, it is never the same and always consistent. It is what ever you want it to be so please enjoy the 'What Is?'
Wedding Book Page Mock-Up
Hey fellow photo peeps! Here is a mock-up of a wedding book page for a customer of mine. I just wanted to get some feedback on the layout idea and see what you think. I'm thinking the text might be too big and that may need some altering but other than that I think I'm getting the right track. The other idea was to simply to a photo album layout and put a black border around the images and maybe have 4-6 per page with a couple full bleeds. I don't know, see what you think.
I also have some new images posted to my blog. Check it out. http://amandaguyphotography.blogspot.com/

Thank you Robert Frank
Perhaps I seem to be going overboard on Robert Frank links, but his work shaped much of my undergraduate experience; from an extensive independent study project, discovering a balance between personal, experimental and documentary work, to calling him on the phone (I was young and full of courage). We didn't have websites or blogs as a resource, just the TR section in the library for inspiration. Looking at and thinking about photography books opened my mind as a undergrad, especially in the case of Frank. His books became a guide for me. I encourage all of you to spend time sitting in the aisles of the TR sections at the library with a pile of books, look for your photography guide. Set aside one day of the month to spend looking. When you find a photographer whose work sparks a passion in you, study their work in length, talk about it with your peers and your professors, look at it again and again-learn from it. What you take from your educational experiences will in part be what you were willing to discover on your own. Those discoveries will remain with you forever and will become the fire in your belly-sustaining you for years to come.
