4x5 Scanning Back
We have the opportunity to get a 4x5 scanning back donated to the school. The only glitch is the hardware only runs on Mac OS 9 and a machine that has both serial and scsi ports. Anyone have one lying around that still works and they no longer want. This would be a cool thing to have, so please go scrating in those basements.

Afghani Street Photographers
Afghani street photographers are being forced into the digital age. This is a really interesting article from the LA Times. I've never heard about the kind of cameras they use, but I'd love to get my hands on one.

Vik Muniz
I had a chance to visit the Museu de Arte de Sao Paolo this morning (free on Tuesdays!) and saw a special exhibit by photographer Vik Muniz. You may already know his work, but if not, check out the link above. Interesting stuff...I really enjoyed his "Pictures of Garbage" series in which he collaborated with people who live and work in the largest garbage dump in the world in Rio to create portraits of them with stuff from the dump. Check out this video that shows Vik making the original photograph and then a time-lapse of the creation of the final piece: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tdgn6uiIq2Y. He was born here in Sao Paolo but apparently lives and works in NY. Here's a quick snapshot of the museum (the special exhibit hall is underground):

PDNedu wants to know
I was recently contacted by a reporter at PDNedu asking about our department's blog. I thought that I should share it on the blog and open it up for comments. Here are some of the questions that she asked:
- 1. Describe your experience with the MSU photo blog. How and when were you introduced to it? How have you used it?
- 2. What do you like about the blog? How have you benefited from it? Do you see any disadvantages to blogging?
- 3. What do you think are the benefits of blogging in general? Outside the context of the university (i.e., in your career), can a blog have any relevance?
- 4. Anything else to add?
- 5. Finally, what year are you in at MSU?

Anyone with filming experience?
One of my brides recently had a complication with the videographer for her wedding and needs to find a replacement. She asked me to inquire if I knew anyone with filming experience who could film her wedding Friday, July 10th. Are any of you interested, or know anyone who would be? I don't know many film kids.
She prefers the person be female but it isn't absolutely necessary.
Please let me know via leaving a comment! Thanks! Hope all your summers are going well...
Basketball photography the Sports illustrated way
Here's a great article about what goes into covering a large sporting event like the NBA Final Four. This gets into the elaborate lighting used for basketball and also the computer networking. Yes, big magazines like SI actually use PC intstead of Mac.
Also note there are several photographers working as a team and each one controls their camera and remote cameras.
