Read This is MSU's Literature and Arts publication and is looking for submissions. They are looking for photographs, poems, etc (read the link). I work with a girl who helps put the publication together and they are always looking for images so...SUBMIT. They publish a few times a year and you can submit for one issue or multiple. Its pays to stay up late

i dont know if anyone else new this but two nights ago was a fairly mild but beautiful northern lights show happening around 12:30 am. this is one that i was able to grab right out side my house before it vanished.

This woman helped raise us while my brother and I were growing up in West Africa. Our mom and dad both worked and the missionary families tried as best they could to employ as many africans as possible, so Aminata functioned as both a work lady and a nanny. She was an incredibly fun, caring woman, and I am thankful for my memories of her.

NOTE: I didn't take this photograph...was probably only 8 or 9 years old at the time. I just rescued it from the oblivion that is my parents' basement. Ian's work always slams me back to childhood, so I thought I'd post and get it off my mind.

Krappy Kamera

I posted a new entry in my blog about assisting for this dude in the 3D space goggles, Mr. Dave Hill. So check it out, it was a lot of fun! He photographed me as a stand in for the actress we were shooting, so I'll definitely be posting that as soon as I get my hands on it!

The Garden Path

Here is a snapshot from a shoot on my recent trip to South Africa. The project is called The Garden Path and I was busy making portraits of gardeners. Phinneas Ndlovu is the guy holding the reflector. He was my assistant on the project.

Camera and Gear Tips

With the start of the new year, here are some tips that will help save time and headaches:

• Always reformat memory cards in-camera, after every use. (Don't format or erase files in the computer.) I already know several people who have lost or almost lost images because they don't format their cards. This is especially important when you buy a new card.
• Backup images before formatting your memory card.
• Label your memory cards with your name and phone number. Hopefully an honest person will return your cards. Otherwise you might be out of luck.
• Label your batteries with your name and phone number. Most cameras in the same product line now use the same batteries, so you won't mix up your batteries with someone else. The Nikon D80, D90, D300, and D700 all use the same battery. The Canon 20D, 30D, 40D, and 50D also all use the same battery.
• Don't buy cheap, generic memory cards. Cheap cards are not as temperature or shock resistant as their higher quality counterparts. They tend to have crappy warranties. Better cards typically have lifetime warranties. Even good, high end cards cards are so cheap now, why settle for anything less?

• Rename your images during import. When transferring new images, it's much easier to have Bridge automatically add the date to your filename and replace the generic DSC_001 or IMG_001. You can also have Bridge add your name, or any word of your choice when importing images. This can be done under File > Get Photos From Camera. If you don't already import your images with Brige, I highly recommend it.

Contrary to depth of field, most lenses are sharpest at 1-2 stops down from their maximum aperture, for current 35mm and digital lenses. Large and medium format lenses may be different Diffraction causes images to become softer the more you stop down from the sharpest aperture of your lens. See examples here. Another example here.

Happy New Year everyone! I hope that you're all enjoying your break and excited to get back to work soon. I hadn't shared anything for a while so I thought I'd pop in and post my most recent portrait. This is Dan Arnold. He's plays guitar and sings for A Static Lullaby. I photographed promos for his as of now unnamed side project on Friday in The Cecil Hotel in downtown LA, about two blocks from Skid Row. It's a really amazing building, but the area was by far the sketchiest I've encountered since moving down here! This image probably won't be used by the band, I took it while testing the lighting, and it turned out to be my favorite. Hope everyone is well!

This is a test of picasa web albums and Google earth (note: not all images from the project are included, and I believe a couple of the coordinates are wrong). Nonetheless it is a starting point for displaying the Roseland project online with the aid of GPS and Google maps.

6 Month Long Exposure

6 month long pinhole image taken of the sun over Bristol's Clifton Suspension Bridge in Britan. Really awsome image. Click the title for the link. Here's a link to info on Solargraphy if anyone is intrested in how to do it. I think Im going to be spending some time playing with this.
