Five extra credit points to capture a stranger, and ten points to capture a stranger touching another stranger just like Renaldi's project "Touching Strangers." I am excited to express that it was quite easy to accomplish, and here are my results. P.S. Take that Aiden!

The months of rumors and speculation are finally over: Nikon has announced its long-awaited D800 FX-format DSLR. As was revealed back in October 2011, the camera offers a staggering 36.3-megapixels — the world’s highest in a 35mm DSLR. Other specs include an ISO range of 100-6400 (expandable to 25,600), 91k RGB 3D color metering, a speedy 51-point AF system, a 3.2-inch LCD screen, 4fps continuous shooting (5fps for DX shots), 1080/30p HD video recording, and… in-camera two-shot HDR.

Collin Avery, my roommate, is having his first solo show at the EXIT Gallery. The reception is Wednesday February 8th @ 5pm in the SUB. There will be wine, beer, and refreshments. Collin will be giving away 25 signed/numbered prints to the first 25 people who attend the reception. See ya there!

“Remain Calm” is an artistic venture into Collin Avery’s detailed observation of ordinary spaces and objects that serve an unsettling purpose. Avery’s photography focuses on self-reflection and his connection with particular physical details of spaces. With inspiration from his childhood, the photos demonstrate how he developed ways to escape difficult mental and physical situations. Avery used these “intimate moments of silence” along with self-introspection and a specific way of viewing the ordinary spaces to compose his photographs. Upon first viewing his work, the subjects of the photographs appear as common unnoticed items, but as Collin claims, his images “are not about finding the extraordinary in the everyday, but instead are about finding the everyday extraordinary.” Upon spending time with the photos, one finds himself connected whether by nostalgia, a fleeting glimpse of a memory, feelings of anxiety, confusion and even disgust at the comforting yet repulsive combinations of dreary paneling, quiet pastels, and floral patterns that we know only too well.

Hi folks, I have finally been able to get the ball rolling on a hosted service that will provide photographers and other creative professionals such as designers and videographers an easy way to maintain their own website. In a nutshell its a comprehensive content management system which already has a sizable list of features, but I thought I would ask you guys if there has been, or is anything that you wish you could do that you cant seem to be able to do with your current website or your current provider (if you use livebooks or some other service). One of the cool parts about the service im collaborating on will be the ability to toggle featuers on and off, because I know people will only want certain features, and not have to deal with or even look at admin pages for features they will never use - but it will be there for if and when you do want it. So, you can scale your web presence as your business or career grows. So...what is your wishlist for a website? I am just seeing if there is anything I missed - and what you guys want as photographers. Cross-browser and cross-platform compatibility is a given, as well as some of the big ones such as ecommerce, blog/photoblog, client proofing, etc...) Otherwise, what kind of feature list would you like to see???

I just talked to Larry Gawel who is coordinating this exhibition. Ship date is firm, and MSU is on board. So you guys need to show how awesome MSU students are and submit prints next week. You only need to submit 1 print that will be able to fit in a 16x16 matte. Prints will need to be in the studio next Friday by 10am. Students who are present on Friday will select (by vote) the final 16 prints. Prints will the be matted and boxed the following Monday and Tuesday and Shipped to Nebraska on Wednesday February. IT'S SENIOR PORTRAIT TIME! I am creating a 2011/2012 yearbook for the MSU Photo Dept. and need your help. I want to photograph all the students in the senior class. Report: Kodak may file for bankruptcy

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — Shares of photography pioneer Eastman Kodak Co. tumbled to a new all-time low Wednesday following a report that the ailing company is getting ready to seek bankruptcy court protection.

The Wall Street Journal, quoting unidentified people familiar with the matter, said Kodak is preparing for a Chapter 11 filing "in the coming weeks" should efforts to sell a trove of digital-imaging patents fall through.

In July, Kodak began shopping around 1,100 digital-imaging patents that financial analysts think might fetch $2 billion to $3 billion.

Kodak's stock dropped 17 cents, or 26.3 percent, to 48 cents Wednesday afternoon. It hit its previous trading low of 54 cents on Sept. 30 when word leaked that it had hired a law firm that advises companies on bankruptcy and restructuring options.

The New York Stock Exchange warned Kodak this week that its shares will be delisted if they stay below $1 for six more months.

The Journal said Kodak is in discussions with potential lenders for around $1 billion in loans called "debtor-in possession financing" that would keep it afloat during a bankruptcy process. The newspaper said a bankruptcy filing could occur this month or early in February.

A Kodak spokesman said the company does not comment on rumor or speculation.

Kodak warned in a securities filing in November that it could run out of cash within a year unless it can sell its digital-imaging patents or raise money selling debt.

The cautionary statement came as Kodak reported a third-quarter loss of $222 million, bigger than a year earlier, and said its cash reserves fell almost 10 percent over the year.

Three members of Kodak's board of directors have resigned in the past two weeks.

The latest to relinquish her post was economist Laura Tyson, a member of the Clinton Administration and a former dean of the Walter A. Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley.

Hey all. There is a lot of stuff left in the finishing room, the alt labs and computer labs after the semester - matboard, paper, books, prints in the drying racks, chemicals etc. If you want to keep any of this stuff you need come by and put it in your locker, or take it home, before closing on Friday.

The labs will be thoroughly cleaned over the break to get them ready for next semester and any stuff left outside lockers will have to be discarded. The only exceptions are the rolls of paper in the demo lab, and large sheets of foamcore that are too big for the lockers - But make sure your name is on them. Also, if you leave a big mess for us to clean up over the break, then you might start next semester with a fine on your account. So come clean up your stuff!

Senior Critique

Want to know what the Seniors have been up to all semester? Want to know what all the hype about Senior Critique has been about? Want to know what you'll be facing in your final year of the photo program? Then come to the Senior Critique on Monday the 12th from 8:30 am to 4:30pm. Everyone is invited so come for the whole day or stop by for a few minutes to see what all the fuss is about!!!

Senior Reminders:
   Critique is in the Black Box from 8:30am to 5pm tomorrow, Monday the 12th. Please do not be late (this does not hold true for those of you with kids or exams bright and early). Everyone is expected to be at critique all day unless you have scheduled meetings, exams or if you have cleared with the professors that you will have to leave for a designated time. We have gotten the basic's for breakfast and lunch covered but if anyone is interested in bringing drinks or other snacks they would be greatly appreciated. We have to be completely out of the theater by 5pm because of the One Acts.
   Don't forget that we need to have two cd's of our images, the CD's should include your 12 to 15 final images no larger then 10in on the largest side (3000pixels) .... 300ppi.
   Technically we are able to get into Riverside at 11am on Monday, we will let you know how late we can stay when we know. We are also able to get into Riverside starting at 9am on Tuesday.
   We will have an itinerary at the critique and can go over any last minute questions about the show either at lunch or after crit is done.

Experimental Photography Workbook, Merry Christmas!

These students (and seven visiting dignitaries!) have images in The Experimental Photography Workbook, 2012. Congratulations! 200+ pages of 10.5pt type experimental bliss. The book went to press as of yesterday. It will be ready in January sometime, right on schedule. Numbers below reference pages, but one page may have more than one image. I think you will be pleased to see yourself in print. Each student with an image in the book will receive a copy. Those of you on campus, come see me mid January to pick it up. Those who are graduated, you’ll have to email me your snail mail address. Unfortunately, I no longer have correct email addresses for a few of the students in the book who gave me permission to use their images in past years. This is why I am posting this list in hopes that somehow they will hear about this and contact me with their snail mail. It is really important to keep in touch with current email once you move on from MSU; I had to remove images from many students whom I could not locate to ask permission.

Next in the pipeline, Alternative Processes Condensed. I will be revising all next year with a deadline of December, adding a new chapter with further research at George Eastman House funded by a recent grant received for summer study. I hope you will be willing to donate images to the new revision if alt was your class of choice. Merry Christmas everyone!

Would you print 44" wide?

Hey people! The school is looking into what printer to buy and this is a poll to find out how many of you photo people would realistically print 44" wide if we had a printer that could do it? Don't reply just if you think it would be cool - only reply if you would actually definitely positively invest the money into paper that size. Keep in mind that a 44" roll of good paper such as Canson/Moab is going to be at least $250 and up for a 50 foot roll. Who would be in?

Thought that in case you haven't come across this yet it would be good to know. Adobe conceded to Apple's philosophy regarding HTML5 and using open web standards in the mobile age and have announced the end of flash for mobile devices, which may eventually lead to the end of flash for desktop development as well, or a possible hybrid of some sorts. Either way, flash will not be a game changer in the web development world anymore.

This doesn't mean your website is obsolete, but next time you decide to redo your website, or get a new one, try and find one that uses javascript (frameworks like jquery or mootools). Javascript and HTML5 can do everything flash can and more, so realize your not missing out on anything either. Not to mention the fact that javascript works on every browser for everyone by default.

In case you're curious to know if a website, product, or service is flash, just right click while viewing.

For those who use slideshowpro, you are ok. They already output a JS/HTML5 counterpart of your website (if you purchased it - consider getting newest version of slideshowpro director as well as slideshowpro for flash) for apple mobile devices, however their desktop version is still flash. Now that flash is going to become less popular over the coming years, Slideshowpro may reevaluate their product, so I think either way they will make sure their customers are taken care of.

About Flash and Apple - Written by Steve Jobs, but almost everything in there are just the facts. Not too much bias.

Bottom line, HTML5 CSS(3) and Javascript will reign. Get a website (website template) or portfolio website service that utilizes those open source standards.

I am working on a portfolio service at present with another web developer (won't be done for a while) but when it is I will let you folks know. MSU discount!!!

Print Exchange?

Hey everyone. I know I'm not the only one who has stacks of prints sitting in boxes, so I was thinking sometime in the future (be it this semester or the next) we could have some sort of print exchange between students. I'd rather have another person's work hanging up on my walls than my own, and keeping them in storage is the last place any artist would like their work to be. So if anyone is interested, let's try to arrange something!

There seems to be some confusion as to when the final senior papers are due. They are due Wednesday, 11/30. You need to turn in two copies, with your rough draft. Ian should receive the copy of the final paper with the draft he corrected and I should receive your final with the draft I corrected. You can either drop it off at our office door or in Room 148 tonight from 5-7p.

I was reading the latest copy of Time magazine and came across several interesting photography related articles. However one of the more interesting gadgets that caught my eye was the light field camera by LYTRO. This digital camera supposedly collects all the standard information that digital cameras already collect along with each light rays vector direction. This theoretically allows you to not have to choose a plane of focus during shooting. I'm not sure how it all works, and there still is a fairly narrow focal plane. There is more info on their website, but it is not very detailed unless you read the inventor's dissertation which is too long for me. I'm sure this is something Rufus Cone could make sense out of.

Dear Photo Students, I am working on a great opportunity with my friend Larry Gawel who teaches photography at Metropolitan Community College in Nebraska. He is putting together a student photo exhibition called 16x16x16. This will be an exchange exhibition between 5 Universities and Colleges. Through a democratic process, MSU students will select 16 prints for the exhibition. These will then be matted 16x16 inches. The set of prints will then travel for exhibition at the 5 Colleges. Work from the other 4-5 schools will be exhibited in the VCB display cases. I am looking for one to three students who can spearhead this great exchange opportunity. Senior Photo Students interesting in having an individual critique with Jacinda Russell on Friday, November 18^th, can list their name on a sign up sheet on my door. Names will be randomly drawn for the eight spots available. The deadline to sign up is 5:00pm on Tuesday, November 15^th and the final results with times will be listed on my office door Wednesday, November 16^th.

Students interested in contemporary art and/or graduate school are encouraged to sign up. Jacinda is an Assistant Professor of Art at Ball State University in Indiana. Her work is grounded in photography but her interest’s range from sculpture, earthworks, performance, installation and conceptual art. Individual critiques will be held between 9:30am and 11:30am on Friday, November 18^th. Critiques are 15 minutes long and you must be willing to take the time assigned to you, if chosen. Critiques will be held in the photography studio. If you participate, bring a body of work (prints preferred) to the critique, a copy of your bio and artist statement. If you would like to speak to her about graduate school, bring a list of grad schools you are considering. BE PREPARED! If you arrive late, you will not receive a critique. Arrive 10 minutes before your assigned critique.

I took some 4x5's of the bridal party at my buddy's wedding yesterday as a favor. His dad promptly gave me a tour of his private collection: 4 Mick Rock images, 2 Cartier-Bressons, and 3 Ansel Adams (1 being a one of a kind polaroid!), all original and signed limited editions!!! It was rad, just thought i would share. See yall in a couple of weeks.

Medium Format Camera For Sale

I'm selling some of my gear which doesn't get used nearly enough.

I'll be listing this camera on ebay in a week or two but I thought I'd let you guys have a chance in case anybody is interested.

It is a beautiful camera with a really sharp lens in excellent condition. They are somewhat hard to come by.

Film Size 120 or 220
Lens Fujinon SW f/5.6 65mm

The counter on the bottom says 173 (x10) frames. That means it has only had approx. 200 rolls of film shot through it.

It is a great landscape (backpacking) camera with it's wide angle lens and compact format.

Anyone contemplating buying it, I'd be happy to let you try shooting a roll of film.

Drop by my office during office hours or catch me in the lab whenever to look at the camera.

I am hoping to start working on a project that involves advertising, and I am wondering if any of you would be willing to save up the junk mail/ads or even magazines you get and give them to me so I that I can make collages out of them. Ads from Sunday newspapers would work as well. What ever you are comfortable with works; I respect your privacy so feel free to black-out or rip out private information (address, etc).

Megan and I visited Riverside to get the layout of the room for the Senior Show. Here it is. Thought this may help anyone with their displaying ideas. We also thought we would keep the middle of the three doors closed to help with the flow of traffic. The food will be set up on the bar room.

(I realize it sounds weird if you have not seen what I'm talking about, but it'll work well). Skateboarding With 4x5

These are some recent 4x5 photographs I took while skateboarding with some friends. Im really interested using the 4x5 to photograph skateboarding, something I feel hasn't really been done in the skate magazine industry. To me, it gives the photograph a totally different feel and perspective, compared to the typical fisheye photos used in skate magazines. Super stoked on how these came out.
